24 Years Ago Today: MC Eiht Releases Debut Album, “We Come Strapped”

24 years ago today, West Coast legend MC Eiht released his debut album, We Come Strapped. His group, Compton’s Most Wanted, was featured on the album making this one of California’s hits before the G-Funk era. The album created a new star on the West Coast, after his breakthrough single “Straight Up Menace” was featured in the film Menace II Society, all eyes were on him.

The album was simple and straight to the point. There were no skits or big name features on the tracks, just Eiht’s gangsta delivery for the listener to witness. The only appearances came from Spice-1, Redman, and his group Compton’s Most Wanted, but overall the attention was focused on him as he rapped over DJ Slip‘s West Coast production.

The album peaked at #5 on the Billboard 200 and #1 on the Top R&B/Hip Hop chart. It was certified gold shortly after its release and it’s considered MC Eiht’s most successful project to date.
