For the past couple of months, Avengers: Endgame was expected to break Avatar‘s record of the biggest movie of all time. Now, those projections have become a reality, as the Avengers film has managed to outsell Avatar‘s long-lasting record.

The Marvel franchise has brought in another $2.8 million dollars via global box office (including the re-release sales). Considering Endgame was only $7.16 million behind Avatar‘s record, it was bound to pass it at some point. It’s important to note that Avatar held the top spot for close to a decade, before the Marvel film passed it this past Saturday.

Marvel president Kevin Feige announced the benchmark during a Comic-Con presentation in San Diego on Saturday.

“A huge congratulations to the Marvel Studios and Walt Disney Studios teams, and thank you to the fans around the world who lifted ‘Avengers: Endgame’ to these historic heights,” Disney co-chairman and chief creative officer, Alan Horn said in a statement. “Of course, even with the passage of a decade, the impact of James Cameron’s ‘Avatar’ remains as powerful as ever, and the astonishing achievements of both of these films are ongoing proof of the power of movies to move people and bring them together in a shared experience. The talented filmmakers behind these worlds have much more in store, and we look forward to the future of both the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Pandora.”

Avengers: Endgame passed the $2.78 billion mark this Saturday, which indicated that they exceeded the $500K needed to surpass Avatar’s $2.78 billion score. With the re-release of the film last month, it proved to be a favorable move for Disney.
