With the forthcoming multi-year spanning Showtime series Hip Hop 50, the story of hip-hop and its cultural influence will now be told with the Universal Hip Hop Museum.

Coinciding with the 50th birthday of the biggest genre in music, and the Nas-backed Hip Hop 50, the UHHM is set to launch in 2023 and will display the rich and multifaceted layers of rap. The museum has been in talks for years now, having been headed by co-founder Kurtis Blow, with early exhibits at the Bronx Terminal Market, but the official groundbreaking ceremony has put everything into place.

The UHHM will be located in the birthplace of hip-hop, the Bronx, New York, and is featured in the Bronx Point project, where the 50,000 square feet UHHM is part of a $349 million project alongside the Harlem River waterfront. According to Hip Hop DX, Bronx Point’s first phase promises to deliver 542 units of permanently affordable housing to the Lower Concourse neighborhood with approximately 2.8 acres of public open space. It will also provide an array of cultural and community-focused programming, including the UHHM, an early childhood space run by BronxWorks, and outdoor science programming run by the Billion Oyster Project.

Legends of the game such as Nas, LL Cool J, Lil Kim, Fat Joe, and EPMD came together for the groundbreaking ceremony where the $80 million UHHM is scheduled to open in 2023 to coincide with Hip Hop’s 50th anniversary.
