With the return of live award shows and the 20th celebration of the BET Awards, this year there will be a lot to look forward to for Sunday’s ceremony. With Queen Latifah scheduled to receive a lifetime achievement award, BET will also take time to remember and honor the life of the late DMX.
X passed just two months ago in April, and while fans were elated to have a posthumously released EXODUS album, the hip-hop community will definitely take a moment to feel the rapper’s impact during his tribute. According to Billboard, it has been confirmed that long-time collaborator Swizz Beatz will be present for the tribute performance, along with Busta Rhymes, Method Man, the Griselda tiro, as well as an appearance from actor Michael K. Williams.
Speaking with Billboard, Connie Orlando, BET’s executive vice president of specials, music programming and music strategy, stated, “We look forward to celebrating DMX’s indelible mark in music and pop culture. DMX inspired fans around the world with his signature raspy voice, the delivery of raw emotion through his lyrics and performances, and his giving spirit.”
The special tribute will include cover performances of DMX’s most iconic hits, including “Party Up (Up in Here),” “Ruff Ryders’ Anthem,” “What’s My Name?” “Get at Me Dog,” “DMX Prayer” and more, as well as music from his posthumous album, Exodus.
