Nas is being delivered the flowers and recognition that has been rightfully overdue for quite some time.
With the NY native recently receiving his first Grammy trophy, just a few weeks ago, for Best Rap Album for his latest ‘King’s Disease’, Nas is now cementing his legacy in hip-hop culture and U.S. history. The classic, debut studio album ‘Illmatic’ is being inducted into the Library Of Congress. The veteran rapper’s 27-year-old debut is one of the newest additions to the National Recording Registry. Librarian of congress Carla Hayden named the project as one of the “audio treasures worthy of preservation for all time based on their cultural, historical or aesthetic importance in the nation’s recorded sound heritage.”

Briefly speaking on the honor and the inspiration for ‘Illmatic’, Nas states, “Queensbridge is a housing project in New York City. You know the story, it’s the good, the bad, the ugly, and I was just trying to survive that.” Nas joins the likes of past inductees which include Jay-Z’s ‘The Blueprint’, Dr. Dre’s ‘The Chronic’, NWA’s ‘Straight Outta Compton’, Lauryn Hill’s debut ‘The Miseducation Of Lauryn HIll’, and many more.
Also a part of the 2020 list of new arrival to the library is Janet Jackson’s 1989 album Rhythm Nation 1814, Labelle’s 1974 single “Lady Marmalade”, Kool & The Gang’s 1980 single “Celebration”, and many others.
