It’s been nearly 20 years since Ashanti released her chart-topping and Grammy-award-winning, self-titled debut album. As the iconic singer just dropped a new collab with Moneybagg Yo and Lil Wayne, the former Murder Inc. go-to is currently making big noise with the news of a re-release of ‘Ashanti.’
Visiting the Tamron Hall show, the “I Want You” singer humbly announced that she now owns the complete masters to the 2002 project and that she will soon re-record the album for a future independent release. Speaking on the exciting moment, Ashanti shares with Hall, “It’s so surreal. I have an amazing legal team, and I got my first record deal when I was 14 years old, so understanding and seeing how things have changed so much from then to now and conceptually understanding what you’re signing is so imperative, it’s so important nowadays. The fact that I’ll be able to re-record my first album, and put everything together.”
If you remember, the number one album featured certified hits “Baby,” “Happy,” and “Foolish,” which Ashanti reflects on the recording process for the project as a teen putting together the album in her home basement, while watching Cartoon Network.
Ashanti also goes on to speak on the viral Verzuz moment when her ex, rapper Nelly, unexpectedly approached her during the momentous hip-hop event.
